Second Wind: My Windsurfing Story Begins — Again

Shawn Windsurfing

You only have one life. You can be afraid to step out, or you can go for it.

Want to be everything God created you for? It’s easy to let life pass by and go the easy route, but easy isn’t always the right choice. Sometimes you have to make hard choices to be on the right path.

Three years ago I had a crazy idea to return to the sport of windsurfing, not just recreationally, but also to teach and compete. It was a crazy idea, but by the grace of God, I decided to go for it.

I didn’t own a windsurfer at the time, and it had been over twenty years since I did any windsurfing. I think I may have gone out once for about ten minutes on a stranger’s board on the beach, but it’s like riding a bike, you never forget.

On March 21, 2015, I wrote in my journal, “this is by far probably one of the craziest ideas I’ve had.”

It sounded crazy to me, but when my wife was on board, I thought maybe this was something I should take seriously. It seemed fresh and I thought about Jesus and how He was even able to raise people from the dead.

I realized this decision was bigger than me. Not only did I hope to bring back windsurfing to my hometown, but I also wanted to have a channel to encourage others to take steps to follow what they feel the Lord put on their hearts.

When it comes to choices, there are only two, you make a move, or you choose to stay in place. I hope that you decide to move in the direction God has placed in your heart.

So how has this gone for me?

It’s been four years now; I’m amazed at just how much has taken place. I did return, and the first order of events was to teach my family, which I did and my wife has taken a love for windsurfing. My wife and I also added windsurfing to our business, Outdoor Gulf Coast, and since then I have taught many windsurfing lessons.

There is more, and I’ll share later. Follow along with the journey, let’s see where God takes this.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be the glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.” Ephesians 2:10
